Hi Creative Explorers,
ANNOUNCEMENT: From now on, due to a busier schedule on upcoming weekends, my blogs will be posted on Mondays. Thanks for your patience. Today, I am thankful that I was physically recovered enough from my injuries to attend the 3-day Tennessee Table Games Con ~ where I learned quite a few unexpected things. I really appreciate all of the helpful and creative feedback on my New Choice: Improv Your Life! improv board game ~ from very experienced gamers and board game creators! It's going to be even better than I imagined! Among other improvements, there will now be 4 characters with special powers! 😁 Now, you may be wondering...why is feedback so important? Say you have a big streak of mustard on your face, and you walk around all day, without anyone saying anything. You may be unaware ~ or you may feel a bit off ~ but you actually just embarrassed yourself all day long, and made a not-so-great impression everywhere you went. You could read books and watch videos that tell you how to strategically use a napkin to wipe your face clean ~ but without a teacher, friend, family member, co-worker, or mirror to show you EXACTLY where the mustard is on your face, it's almost impossible to remove it all on your own. And, you may need more than just a napkin! Yes, you can read books and watch YouTube videos on how to improve your singing, acting, or songwriting... ...but, those books and YouTube videos can't see you or hear you ~ and don't know what YOUR specific issues are! You don't know what you don't know. The value of one-on-one voice lessons with a holistic voice coach, like me, is that you get to work with someone who is knowledgable, experienced, and caring, ~ who can give you personalized feedback and custom solutions that usually work instantly. Why waste your time and effort without getting feedback? With one-on-one Holistic Zoom Voice Lessons, you could be learning: "as MUCH as possible, as SOON as possible, as SIMPLY as possilble"! How does that sound to you? ~~~~~ NEW TESTIMONIAL "I am a relatively new student with Karen , having had four lessons so far. I was immediately struck by the kind and positive way that Karen had of interacting with her students. I felt like she was truly excited about getting to know me and work with me. She is highly creative and motivational. I am 69 years old taking lessons for the first time in my life, and Karen was able to quickly discern what I needed with great sensitivity to my personal limitations. She made me believe, right away, that she saw potential for me to grow and improve in my singing. I look forward to each lesson and always have fun! Karen is innovative and intuitive that creativity of hers is evident in her techniques. I would highly recommend her to anyone." ~ Cynthia Hauger ~~~~~ The Holistic Voice Coach Blog by Karen Lyu https://www..holisticvoicecoach.com/blog ~~~~~ Book a FREE 45-Min Vocal Discovery Call: https://tinyurl.com/MeetKarenonZoom ~~~~~ 612-299-2462 karen@holisticvoicecoach.com

Hey Everyone,
Today's blog is about acting choices ~ and about my new game. Last week, I went to DragonCon in Atlanta, and had the best time! And, though I couldn't stay long, I was grateful and encouraged to get enthusiastic support from 70% of the people who took a good look at my "New Choice: Improv Your Life" board game ~ and 100% thought that it was a good idea, at the very least! That's more than I expected! In case you're a latecomer, New Choice is: "The improv board game that gets you to speak, sing, or act ~ and grow at your own comfort level!" See below for the FULL BETA New Choice: Improv Your Life! board game design ~ with 20 countries represented! Like Monopoly and Life, it is for ages 6 to adult ~ for the young, and the young at heart. "With that board game design, you're going to give Monopoly a run for their money." ~ Eben Appleton, retired CEO of Docs On-line For those of you who may not know the comedy improv acting game "New Choice" that my board game is based on, here is how it works: Two or more actors start to spontaneously improv a scene based on an audience suggestion, but the host can interject "New choice!" as many times as they like, until the actor says a line that the host wants to keep. This can wildly change the ongoing scene. REMEMBER... In ANY MOMENT, in acting + in life, you can choose: 1. Your Thoughts 2. Your Feelings 3. Your Actions 4. Your Place of where you are (even if it is just across the room) Want to get a jist of how it works? Here are some examples: Your Thoughts (example) 1. I am safe. New Choice! 2. What's for dinner? New Choice! 3. What's my goal? New Choice! 4. Everything's going to be alright. New Choice! 5. Who would I want to be with on a desert island? Your Feelings (example) 1. I'm feeling lonely. New Choice! 2. I'm starving! New Choice! 3. I am bamboozled! New Choice! 4. I'm feeling utterly confused? New Choice! 5. I am super curious! Your Actions (example) 1. I am feeding the dog. New Choice! 2. I am reading a book. New Choice! 3. I am hiking along the river. New Choice! 4. I am riding a hot air balloon! New Choice! 5. I am doing the Boston Marathon! Your Place (example) 1. I am on the couch. New Choice! 2. I am on the porch. New Choice! 3. I am at my FAVORITE restaurant. New Choice! 4. I am at Como Conservatory! New Choice! 5. I am at the Taylor Swift Eras Concert! Having fun? Want to keep going? BTW - For each NEW CHOICE, you can speak, act as a different character, improvise a little song ~ or even practice a different language! Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming opportunity to learn to unlock your vocal potential and have a blast while doing it! And, be among the first to get news about the upcoming Kickstarter campaign. As promised last week, I have posted Taylor's powerful and poetic new song, "I'm the Artist" under her artist name, "Vaine" ~ which makes her feel more confident. "I'm the Artist" is inspired by 2 out of 3 assigned optional prompts: Theme: Art and Picture: A path to a nice beach. As a third optional prompt, Vaine was given 12 random words - none of which she chose to use. Everyone gets inspired differently. TIP: Using FREE YouTube beats is an easy way to get your juices flowing as a newbie songwriter and end up with a pro-sounding song. It is also based on this FREE Doja Cat-style danceable pop beat found on YouTube: https://youtu.be/YpsrWE1QeE4?si=o_mPm8l_OY-4cuyL It's hard to believe that Vaine has been singing + songwriting for less than a year. Eventually, she plans to record it with the same chords and structure, but with original beats and production ~ to someday pitch for sync licensing! Full disclosure: all the lyrics are written by Vaine, with the exception of 3 modified phrases - assisted by ChatGPT. "I'M THE ARTIST" by lyrics by Vaine (aka Taylor) © Copyright 2023. Vaine. Walking along the shore, the waves are kissing the sand. Trying to find myself, experience a love so grand. With every step I take, and every breeze that blows I’m learning to love myself and let my inhibitions go. Painting my confidence. I’m the muse, I can choose. How do I see my shade Tonight I’m jade, later I’m blue How can I explain My life’s a blend of different hues. It doesn’t really matter It’s my life, and I’m the artist. I’m the artist Dancing down the street. Spirits free. Yeah, I’m the artist I’m the artist All of my stess release My masterpiece Yeah, I’m the artist The sun is shining bright, The beams caress my skin. With all my progress, I’ve embraced the strength within. Perfection made of flaws Evolving every day, I may have lost myself But I’m finding my way It’s ok to adjust Mold myself like clay With every scar I bear I know I’ll be ok Blurry skies start to clear Breaking free from within Painting my confidence I’m the muse I can choose How do I see my shade Tonight I’m jade, later I’m blue How can I explain My life’s a blend of different hues It doesn’t really matter It’s my life, and I’m the artist I’m the artist Dancing down the street Spirits free Yeah, I’m the artist I’m the artist All of my stress release My masterpiece Yeah, I’m the artist * PLEASE SHARE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW. ~~~~~ The Holistic Voice Coach Blog by Karen. I'm SO GRATEFUL that we have both become much more loving and appreciative of each other, over time. My friends, especially in MN, have been going out of their way to make me feel SPECIAL, too. Another reason that I have been feeling loved, is that 4 of my old voice students came back, this month ~ and, more are on the way! I'm feeling extra appreciated and valued, as a Holistic Voice Coach right now! They all missed me and wanted to more of what I have to offer, and that feels wonderful! Happy Friday! I am moving my blog posts to Fridays, due to being busier now on Wednesdays. FYI - I had a mostly magical trip to Minneapolis, MN for 5 weeks ~ and I will never be the same! One not so good thing that happened: I injured my back, neck, and right shoulder. However, 2.5 weeks of rest and recovery were LIFE-RENEWING after a hard year (my dad died). I now have a completely different vision for my future life than I had last year ~ and I am SO INSPIRED! Also, I was blessed to share my voice for 2 very meaningful and wildly different memorial services, a moving Re-Verb open mic, a joyful Augusta Senior Center accordion concert, and Bruce Henry’s PHENOMENAL “50 Years in Music” reunion concert at the Dakota jazz club! Most importantly, I was touched and astonished at how many of my fantastic friends in Minnesota just aren't really into social media...they use their PHONES to keep in touch ~ and I lost most of my US numbers when I moved to South Korea in 2011. So, I now have around a couple dozen more phone numbers of real friends that I were not able to reach easily before! Y'all this is a PSA to PLEASE CALL YOUR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES! Who do you keep in touch with, and how? Social media is just not the same ~ and life is short. All of this has led me to remember THIS l article that I wrote back on January 8, 2009, a year after I left Minneapolis, MN and moved to Nashville, TN.... ~~~~~ 5 Easy Voice Tips to Speak Effectively by Phone Have you heard that studies show 97% of what we communicate by phone is by vocal tone? That means only 3% of your message is understood from the actual words! Now imagine a radio announcer saying "Hello" with a clear, warm and projected voice. Did you notice your body reacting in a different way? How does it make you feel? And that's just one word! Take care of yourself, advocate for your mental and physical health, and remember to stay safe out there! ,Hey there, music lovers! Last week, was Part 2 ~ Key, and we talked about how the key can radically change a song. Today, let's dive into the world of singing with emotion. We all know that music has the power to move us deeply, and as singers, we strive to convey those emotions to our audience with authenticity and impact. We wouldn't want to sing a happy song in a sad or angry or shocked way, right? So, how can we take our singing to the next level and make our performances truly unforgettable? Well, let's explore four essential elements: facial expressions, sound, gestures, and sensations.
Let's unleash the power of facial expressions, sound, gestures, and sensations, to take our performances to new emotional heights. Connect with the lyrics, let your voice carry the weight of those emotions, and allow your body to speak the unspoken. Singing with more emotion isn't just about technique—it's about creating a profound connection with your audience and leaving a lasting impact. Today, let's dive into a captivating topic that lies at the heart of singing, acting, and voiceover: the incredible power of words. You know, those little combinations of letters that have the ability to make us feel all sorts of emotions, visualize stories, and connect with people on a deep level. So, buckle up and join me on this exploration of how words shape our performances in the most extraordinary ways.
1: Phrasing Ever been mesmerized by a singer who takes your breath away with every word, or an actor who effortlessly captures the essence of a character? That's the magic of phrasing at work. It's like breaking down words and musical phrases into precious, meaningful gems. Singers use strategic pauses and breaths between phrases, creating a natural flow that touches your soul with the lyrics. In acting and voiceover, it's all about finding those perfectly timed breaks and pauses, adding rhythm and emphasizing the essence of the dialogue. Phrasing gives performances structure, engaging the audience and keeping us spellbound from start to finish. 2. Inflection Inflection is the secret sauce that adds flavor and depth to our performances. Inflection refers to how we shape words—the rise and fall of pitch, emphasizing certain syllables, and playing with our tone. It's the art of giving words a personality, a rhythm, and a musicality. Skilled performers understand the nuances of inflection and use it to their advantage, creating a symphony of meaning. It's about highlighting the key ideas, capturing the essence of our characters, and keeping our audience on the edge of their seats. 3. Diction Diction is the articulation of our artistry. Diction covers the style, clarity, and overall delivery of our speech or singing. It's the careful choice of words, the precise pronunciation, and the finesse in our phrasing. A well-honed diction ensures that the audience receives our message loud and clear. It's like speaking or singing with a touch of elegance, enhancing the effectiveness of our storytelling, engaging the crowd, and leaving a lasting impression. 4. Stories Every performance, whether on stage or behind a microphone, begins with a compelling story. These stories serve as the foundation for capturing the hearts and minds of the audience. Through the skillful use of words, we can paint vivid pictures and transport listeners to different worlds. Each word becomes a brushstroke, creating a canvas of emotions and experiences. The power of words allows us to embark on a thrilling adventure with every performance, evoking a range of emotions and leaving a lasting impact on the audience. 5. Characters Within the realm of creative expression, the importance of well-developed characters cannot be overlooked. As singers, actors, and voiceover talent, we have the unique opportunity to bring these characters to life. By stepping into their shoes, we unlock a world of possibilities. Through our performances, we invite the audience to witness the complexities and journeys of these intriguing characters. Words become the vessel through which we embody their thoughts, emotions, and motivations. By immersing ourselves in the essence of these characters, we create a connection with the audience that resonates deeply and enhances the overall impact of our work. 6. Etymology. The origin of meaning in every word carries a rich history encapsulated within its etymology. Understanding the roots and evolution of words allows performers to fully grasp their intended meanings. Whether it's a song, a theatrical performance, or a voiceover project, delving into the etymology of words provides a deeper connection to their essence, enabling artists to infuse authenticity and intention into their delivery. Now, let's bring this journey to a close. When it comes to singing, acting, and voiceover, we can't ignore the sheer importance of words. They're the key ingredients that give performances unforgettable taste. From phrasing to inflection, stories to characters, diction to etymology, words shape the very essence of our art. They allow us to create moments that leave a lasting impression on our audiences. So, let's appreciate the magic of words and embrace their power in our quest for artistic expression. They have the ability to move mountains, touch hearts, and spark something special in those who experience our work. Cheers to the beauty of words and the incredible impact they hold! ~~~~~ The Holistic Voice Coach Blog by Karen.
